LOIS
MALIOU JONES
1904-1998
Lois
Mailou Jones energetic paintings of island motifs such
as Menemshas harbor or the carousel in Oak Bluffs show
influences of an Impressionist palette as well as Haitian
and African experiences. "Painting is my life, my life
is painting" summarizes Lois Jones passion as one
of Americas great artists and teachers. Her paintings
in the 1930s showed an African-American influence at
a time when artists were portraying African subjects in a
sympathetic way. This period was a time of intense artistic
activity known as the Harlem Renaissance with that area of
New York becoming the international capital of black culture.
During the 1950-60s Ms. Jones began to spend summers
on Marthas Vineyard and became associated with the Marthas
Vineyard Art Association and began to exhibit with those artists.
Her work and vibrant personality added vitality to the art
scene in the island for many years.
